U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro has nominated 35 works by Latinx musical artists for preservation by the Library of Congress — and the checklist is heavy with native favorites, starting from Tejano queen Selena to Alamo Metropolis-tied supergroup the Texas Tornados.
Castro, a San Antonio Democrat, final month requested the general public to submit solutions of recordings by Latinx artists to appoint for inclusion within the Library of Congress’ Nationwide Recording Registry. That decision resulted in 700 submissions, which have been whittled all the way down to 35, in accordance with his workplace.
As well as Selena’s “Como la Flor” and the Texas Tornados’ “(Hey Child) Que Paso,” Castro’s nominations with San Antonio or South Texas ties embrace Freddy Fender’s “Earlier than the Subsequent Teardrop Falls,” Sunny and the Sunliners’ “Discuss to Me,” Vikki Carr’s “It Should Be Him” and Little Joe y La Familia’s “Las Nubes.”
Castro and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have been working to extend the variety of Latinx artists represented within the Nationwide Recording Registry. As of 2023, fewer than 5% of the archive’s 600 titles have been recorded by Latinx musicians, in accordance with the congressman.
“The Nationwide Recording Registry’s very existence speaks to the essential position that music performs in American tradition and society,” Castro wrote in his nomination letter. “The scarceness of Latino artists in our nation’s recording legacy has wide-reaching implications on how Latinos are perceived in American society. Latino music and its affect will be discovered throughout languages, geographical boundaries, and genres. Latino artists, by their musical contributions, have marked all features of American life and are price celebrating and preserving.”
Final yr, Castro and the caucus submitted 33 nominations to the registry. In early 2023, the Library of Congress inducted two of these nominations — Irene Cara’s “Flashdance…What A Feeling” (1983) and Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” (2004) — together with Mariah Carey’s “All I Need for Christmas is You” (1994) and the primary recordings of mariachi music.
