
With Satisfaction Month underway, District 1 Metropolis Councilwoman Sukh Kaur this week filed a proposal to rename a portion of North Essential Avenue — the first thoroughfare by way of town’s Satisfaction District — after the late drag performer Erica Andrews.
“This designation is about highlighting an essential a part of San Antonio’s historical past,” Kaur mentioned in a press release. “Erica Andrews was not solely a groundbreaking performer on the worldwide stage; she was a mentor, a group builder, and a supply of visibility and delight for generations of LGBTQ+ people in San Antonio and past.”
Andrews, who died in 2013 at age 43, lived in San Antonio between 1992 and 2012 and was a widely known determine within the metropolis’s LGBTQ+ group. In 2006, the Mexico-born Andrews was named Miss Worldwide Drag Queen Thailand and was the “matriarch” of the Andrews drag household, which incorporates two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, Roxxxy Andrews.
The Kaur’s proposed designation wouldn’t change the official road identify or its mailing addresses, her workplace mentioned.

Kaur’s proposal comes months after the councilwoman helped lead the cost to color the sidewalks in San Antonio’s Satisfaction District rainbow. That transfer got here after Gov. Greg Abbott ordered Texas cities to take away “political” pavement markings from their roadways, together with the rainbow coloured crosswalks on the intersection of North Essential Avenue and Evergreen Road.
