Considered one of San Antonio’s most acclaimed spots for North African delicacies is pausing to mourn the loss of life of its founder. Moroccan Bites Tagine, at 5718 Evers Rd. close to Leon Valley, says its beloved matriarch and founder, Latifa Ghafai, handed on June 11.
The restaurant paid tribute to Ghafai in a touching Fb announcement.
“Her household is presently taking this time to grieve, replicate, and rejoice her extraordinary life,” wrote a restaurant rep. “She poured her coronary heart and soul into each dish, and her ardour was the cornerstone of our restaurant.”
Ghafai relocated to San Antonio in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina destroyed her New Orleans residence. Lacking the delicacies of her homeland, she dreamed up Moroccan Bites Tagine in 2009 — reportedly retaining the preliminary lease a secret from her daughters, Wafa and Nadia El Maroudi.
Initially, the restaurant, San Antonio’s first Moroccan eatery, solely had six tables. The household had expanded by the point Man Fieri stopped by for an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. In response to the restaurant, the Mayor of Flavortown was so impressed with the dishes that he doubled his filming time.
Though it didn’t give a timeline, Moroccan Bites assured visitors that the restaurant would finally return.“
