Have fun the Worldwide Day of Flamenco this Sunday with a efficiency by dance troupe Arte Y Pasión at Most important Plaza that includes Geneviève Obregon, Celeia Cellars and Jose Manuel Tejeda.
Flamenco emerged in Southern Spain, born on the streets and alleyways by the descendants of people that migrated from Northern India: gitanos, the Spanish Romani. Flamenco finally fused with the encompassing Andalusian tradition, creating additional hybridization, together with the inflow of Moorish influences.
The shape fuses track (cante), dance (baile) and musicianship (toque) together with percussive hand clapping (palmas), finger snapping (pitos) and foot stomping. Every gesture holds which means and references a spread of human feelings — defiance, longing, sympathy or sorrow — together with the call-and-response participation of the viewers (jaleo), which is an indication of solidarity, help and a factor of magnificence.
UNESCO acknowledges flamenco as a part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Free, 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, Most important Plaza, 115 N. Most important St., (210) 281-4339, mainplaza.org.
