Race to exchange Manny Pelaez in District 8 comes right down to runoff

The race to exchange District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez is coming right down to a runoff between a former chief of workers to Mayor Ron Nirenberg and a conservative lawyer who served on town’s Ethics Assessment Board. 

Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, the Nirenberg chief, took 40.33% of the vote. Paula McGee, the lawyer, took 22.22%. 

With no candidate taking no less than 50% of the vote, the highest two finishers advance to a June 7 runoff.

Realtor and landlord Sakib Shaikh, who had been a prime fundraiser and benefitted from massive spending by an education-focused PAC, missed the runoff by 77 votes.

San Antonio’s Metropolis Council District 8 encompasses town’s far Northwest aspect, north of Loop 1604.

Within the remaining stretch of a heated race, Gonzalez was attacking realtor Shaikh for unpaid taxes, whereas Shaikh in flip accused Meza Gonzalez of monetizing her Metropolis Corridor connections via lobbying work.

At her watch occasion Saturday evening, Meza Gonzalez, who ran unsuccessfully for Bexar County Choose in 2022, appeared grateful to have moved previous the battle.

“We listened to residents and residents felt like they had been a part of this marketing campaign,” mentioned Meza Gonzalez. “And that’s actually a very powerful factor, is that residents really feel like we’re listening to them.”
