De La Torre Brothers, Colonial Ambiance
In March 2024, brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre unveiled their exhibition Upward Mobility on the McNay Artwork Museum.
4 months later, San Antonio Poet Laureate Eduardo “Eddie” Vega and others will collect this Sunday for a multimedia occasion, mixing the de la Torres’ brothers’ sculptures and lenticular prints with written rhymes and revelations. Upward Mobility examines tradition, life-style and the political local weather on each side of the United States-Mexico border, utilizing a smorgasbord of visible influences, from Aztec mythology and Catholic iconography to Nineties popular culture. Regardless of its wit, humor and eye-popping coloration palette, the set up doesn’t draw back from earnest and weighty commentary on immigration and overconsumption.
San Antonio Poet Laureate Vega tackles related points in his physique of labor, together with the printed collections Chicharra Refrain and Somos Nopales. Nicknamed “The Taco-Poet of Texas,” Vega’s work facilities on meals, Tejano tradition, social justice and the sudden intersections between them.
Three extra native poets — Georgie Lee, Mark Heinlein and Violeta Garza — will be a part of Vega at this studying.
Tickets are free for McNay members, kids beneath 12 and members of the Museums For All program. Admission for nonmember adults is $20. Ticket value contains museum admission and entry to Upward Mobility.
