Softcult
Canadian twin sisters Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn used the pandemic to deal with their imaginative and prescient of creating music collectively, and Softcult is the outcome. Austin band My Training constructs evocative instrumental post-rock soundscapes that really feel timeless. The group has earned reward for performing stay movie scores, notably a stirring reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s Dawn. Opener Gary Davenport, in the meantime, is considered one of SA’s nice pop-weirdo geniuses, and his work spans all the best way again to the ’70s. Data Society, Something Field, Machine X
Again within the ’80s, Data Society’s synth- and sequencer-heavy hit “What’s on Your Thoughts (Pure Power)” appeared like our digital near-future. Apparently the act’s prescience gave it endurance. Tropicana Joe
Immediately recognizable by his panama hat, high-waisted trousers, pencil-thin mustache and tucked-in tropical shirts, Tropicana Joe is a mainstay of the Austin and San Antonio music scenes as a self-described ambassador for the Exotica sound. Exotica reached its peak within the ‘50s and ‘60s when U.S. troopers returned from the Pacific Theater of World Battle II with wild tales of even wilder lands. Thought of by many to be pseudo-tropical imitation for armchair adventurers, the style largely fell out of vogue for its fetishizations. Because of this, the style is oft misunderstood and maligned. As a result of his work shedding gentle on this area of interest style and for his intensive assortment of uncommon wax tracks, Tropicana Joe was honored as Greatest DJ within the 2024 Austin Music Awards.
