Members of the San Antonio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce can have a bit of historical past readily available at this Saturday’s Satisfaction Larger Than Texas Parade.

Marchers for the group will carry a bit of the Gilbert Baker Rainbow Flag, a record-breaking banner created in 2003 to stretch from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The banner, developed by Baker to commemorate the twenty fifth anniversary of the Rainbow Flag’s creation, was later divided into sections and distributed to cities across the globe.

Baker, a San Francisco-based artist and political activist, labored with a collective to create the primary Rainbow Flag in 1978 beneath fee from Harvey Milk, California’s first overtly homosexual elected official. Since then it is turn into essentially the most widely known worldwide image of the LGBTQ+ neighborhood.

Baker, who died in 2017, refused to trademark the flag, arguing it was a logo of hope, pleasure and power that belonged to your complete LGBTQ+ neighborhood.

“We’re extremely honored to hold this historic piece of the Gilbert Baker Rainbow Flag,” Luis Vazquez, government director of the San Antonio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, mentioned in an emailed assertion. “This flag not solely represents the wealthy historical past and resilience of our neighborhood but additionally serves as a reminder of the continuing struggle for equality and acceptance.”

The Satisfaction Larger Than Texas Evening Parade will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday, following North Most important Avenue south from West Dewey Place to West Euclid Avenue. It is free to observe.
