The Tony Award-winning and multi-movie-spawning musical Hairspray is ready to sashay and shimmy via a restricted two-day run in San Antonio.
Hairspray facilities across the adventures of Tracy Turnblad (Caroline Eiseman), a feisty teenage lady dwelling in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1960. Rising from the straight-laced ’50s, Tracy needs nothing greater than to chop free and unleash her ardour for dance.
The right alternative presents itself when her favourite after-school tv music program, The Corny Collins Present, places out an open casting name. Tracy races to the studio the next morning, coming face-to-face with its intimidating govt, Velma von Tussle (Sarah Hayes).
Velma’s immoral management strategies — from pulling strings to place her daughter middle stage to vehemently opposing racial integration — catch Tracy off guard. Much more stunning: nobody appears to wish to arise for what’s proper.
Though Tracy is turned away on the door, she embarks on a mission to oust Velma and reform The Corny Collins Present’s exclusionary casting, giving everybody the prospect to bounce.
