The Work: “Seated Monkey”
The “Seated Monkey” welcomes guests close to the doorway of the Latin American Standard Artwork Gallery on the San Antonio Museum of Artwork. The earthenware piece, dated to round 1900, was created in Guanajuato, Mexico. The playful art work depicts a monkey sitting on a stump, its knees pressed in opposition to its chest and its tail curled beneath it. The grinning critter sports activities a jaunty hat with a broad brim.
The piece has been a favourite of holiday makers for the reason that gallery first opened in 1998 because the Latin American Folks Artwork Gallery. And so, it made the minimize when the exhibition was re-installed as a part of a makeover in 2020.
The “Seated Monkey” will not be the one monkey in a hat within the gallery. Just a few ft away, one other glass case features a tray holding a smaller glazed ceramic monkey in the same pose, a porkpie hat perched on its head. The tray is a part of a set that features six matching cups within the form of tiny monkey heads. These are dated to round 1940 and had been created in Puebla, Mexico.
The gallery, which reopened following a makeover in 2020, will be discovered on the primary ground of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Heart for Latin American Artwork on the museum.
