New mural celebrates the historical past of San Antonio’s Plaza de Armas | Arts Tales & Interviews | San Antonio

Christopher Montoya’s Iluminación de la Plaza has been put in on the Plaza de Armas.

A brand new mural illustrating the colourful historical past of San Antonio’s Plaza de Armas was unveiled Friday morning.

The Metropolis of San Antonio Division of Arts & Tradition partnered with native painter and muralist Christopher Montoya to fee the Iluminación de la Plaza in downtown San Antonio.

Comprised of over 970 porcelain tiles, the large-scale mural now adorns the wall of the Plaza de Armas constructing that faces San Pedro Creek, spanning 18 by 24 ft.

Montoya’s design encompasses the historic significance and utilization of the Plaza, from navy parade grounds and market sq., to the cattle grounds and vendor area of the Texas Chili Queens. The full of life scene is bordered by structure resembling the Plaza de Armas constructing and framed in by brightly-colored serape curtains.

“Finishing this mural in such a traditionally wealthy space of downtown has been an enormous honor for me as a local artist to San Antonio,” Montoya mentioned in a press assertion.

Montoya added that he’s grateful to have the ability to incorporate his artworks into the general panorama of town.

“The constructing itself is historic and delightful, and this mural brings an entire new vitality to the neighborhood area,” Division of Arts & Tradition Director Krystal Jones mentioned.
